I have a fondness for well-produced 80s synth-pop music. The list of artists most played on my iPod include ABC, a-ha, Scritti Politti, and The Human League. Level 42's Lessons in Love has always been one of my favorite tunes. I recently discovered more of the band's music. The songs have that great bright synthesizer sound, prominent brass, and inventive lyrics. What really makes Level 42 stand out is the amazing bass guitar skills of Mark King. "To Be With You Again" from their 1987 album Running in the Family is a great song and one of the best showcases of King's talent.

YouTube is great for catching concert clips of bands I didn't fully appreciate until now. I just wish there was a version that stays focused on King's bass playing. Well, the next best thing is videos of people playing his part at home. And there are also several great videos of Mark King live solos. The band's superb musicianship is perhaps best displayed in this clip of Mr. Pink:
